H.E. O.L. Ameer Ajwad leads the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Riyadh as Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, guiding the Mission's work to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries and to safeguard the welfare and interests of the Sri Lankan community across the Kingdom.
His Excellency Omar Lebbe Ameer Ajwad is the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, serving since June 2024 — a career diplomat with 26 years of experience in the Sri Lanka diplomatic service. He previously served as Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (overseeing planning, bilateral treaties, political affairs and consular matters); as Ambassador to the Sultanate of Oman (2019–2022, with concurrent accreditation to Yemen); Acting High Commissioner to Singapore (2018–2019, concurrently Brunei Darussalam); at the Deputy High Commission in Chennai (2011–2015); the Permanent Mission to the UN in Geneva (2005–2009); and at the Embassy in Riyadh (2000–2003).
He represented Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council since its establishment and served as Coordinator/Spokesperson for the Asian Group of Human Rights Experts during its institution-building process. He holds an LL.M (University of Colombo), a BA (University of Peradeniya) and an LL.B (University of Colombo), and was admitted to the Sri Lankan Bar in 1997. He speaks English, Arabic, Sinhala and Tamil.
Ambassador Ameer Ajwad authored the book "Sri Lanka – Oman Relations: Past, Present and Future." His recognitions include "Person of the Year 2021" (World Growth Forum), the "Knight of Honour – Diplomacy Award" (AsiaOne), and the Sri Lanka Presidential National Youth Award (1988, for both oratory and essay writing).
